The included photographs follow a group of faux rocks as they attempt to assimilate into the Playa, the residency’s namesake dried-up saltwater basin. The rocks became both an initial offering to the land and an intermediary before I directly applied my own human hand. As I cultivated my relationship with this breathtaking but at-risk land, the anomaly of the smoke cloud grew clearer. These images thus offer visual documentation not only of my introduction to the Playa but of the slow creep of the wildfire smoke, into both the land itself and my own awareness.
